IGP orders immediate implementation of new salary structure to prevent strike

In order to ward off the threat of a nationwide strike by Nigerian Police (NPF) men and officers, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate implementation of a new salary scheme for police officers. in the countryside.

Baba also approved the distribution of uniforms and other equipment to NPF men.

The move came as rumors of a nationwide industrial action by police grew over the week, forcing police to issue a statement denying the rumour.

Officers planned to go on strike over non-enforcement of their new police pay structure, failure to provide sophisticated crime-fighting weapons and poor general officer welfare.

The Force’s acting public relations officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Monday, described the report as “a malicious attempt by unscrupulous individuals to discredit the Force, misinform the public and warm the political regime”.

But with the new measures taken by the IGP, the police hierarchy does not seem to be taking the rumor lightly as it has mandated the NPF authorities to take urgent measures to nip any planned industrial action in the bud.

In a police wireless message dated March 15, 2022, with CB reference number: 4001/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/Vol, Department Heads and State Police Commissioners are urged to educate their officers about the reasons why they should not try to continue the strike.

Part of the police signal made available to Ripples Nigeria reads:

“Intelligence reports available to the Inspector General of Police indicate that some rank and file members intend to strike over non-payment of new police pay structure, failure to supply sophisticated weapons to fight crime and poor general well-being of police officers.

“Note that the Inspector General of Police had ordered the immediate calculation of salary under the new salary structure, tax relief/exemption for officers and men for immediate implementation, distribution of kits and other equipment have been initiated with the force headquarters already concluded.”
