FG approves new salary structure for NIMC staff

The federal government has approved a new salary structure for the staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), seven months after staff protested insufficient funding.

Communication and Digital Economy Minister Isa Pantami announced the approval in Abuja on Thursday.

President Muhammadu Buhari transferred the commission to the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in October 2020.

On January 7, NIMC staff went on strike over poor staff welfare and exposure to COVID-19 while registering for the NIN.

Mr. Pantami said that the new terms of service and salary scale have increased the total cost of NIMC staff by 200%.

He advised the commission’s board and management to ensure funds are used wisely for the intended purpose, and instructed staff members to justify the federal government’s move.

NIMC Acting Chairman Bello Gwandu said there have been failed attempts since 2010 to achieve better welfare for NIMC’s workforce.

“Since 2010, we have been galvanizing our efforts to ensure positive change in the fortunes of NIMC’s workforce, but each time we take a successful step forward, there seem to be multiple blockages that impede our pace. “, did he declare.
